Steady trajectory

A product of United’s youth system, the Salford-born Fitzgerald has been with the club since childhood and is widely considered one of the most exciting prospects within the ranks.

The versatile starlet has previously drawn comparisons with Barcelona and Spain legend Sergio Busquets due to his style of play.

In addition to playing in the middle of the park, Fitzgerald can also be deployed to great effect in central defence.

He was an unused substitute for the first team on three occasions in late 2024 during Ruud van Nistelrooy’s brief stint as interim boss.

Fitzgerald was on the bench for a 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, a 1-1 top-flight draw with Chelsea and a 2-0 victory over Greek side PAOK Salonika in the Europa League.

The 19-year-old helped United win the Under-18 Premier League, the U-18 Premier League Cup and the FA Youth Cup. He has also turned out four times for the Under-21s in the Vertu Trophy.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Fitzgerald was on the verge of joining Rotherham on loan and now, both clubs have confirmed the transfer.

Fitzgerald joins Rotherham

A United statement partially reads, “He joins South Yorkshire outfit Rotherham where former United youth player Alex Bruce has taken charge as head coach this summer, after former Reds assistant Steve McClaren arrived as the club’s head of football in May.”

“We wish Jayce the best of luck for this season and will be keeping a close eye on his progress.”

The Millers have credited Dan Gore, who enjoyed a loan spell at the club during the 2025/26 season, with helping to persuade Fitzgerald to join.

Fitzgerald’s signing has been finalised in time for him to be part of the side’s squad that will face Tranmere Rovers tomorrow night.
