On-loan Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena has finally opened up about his decision to leave the Blaugrana and join Elche for the 2025/26 season.

It must be noted that after signing a three-year contract extension with Barcelona in August, the 26-year-old opted for a move that prioritises his personal well-being and career growth.

Speaking at his official presentation with Elche, Pena explained that the move was influenced by a desire to regain stability after a challenging previous season.

“I played 25 or 26 games, but you’re left with a bitter feeling after not playing in the last few months,” he said as reported by AS.

The goalkeeper praised Elche’s approach, stating that he had “weighed the pros and cons” before making the decision.

“I’m coming home. I’m from Alicante, my people are from here, and my wife is from here.

“And then there’s the manager’s philosophy. I’ve worked with him, and the best conditions are in place to give 100 percent or to be close to my best performance,” he added.

Seeking consistency and motivation

Pena also addressed speculation that injuries to Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Joan Garcia at Barcelona could have provided him with more playing opportunities.

“I could have played a few more games, but I had already decided I wanted to leave.

“The club asked me to wait until they registered the goalkeepers, and obviously, I was going to make it easy, because I have a contract,” he explained.

The goalkeeper emphasised that his move to Elche is not just a short-term plan or a stepping stone back to Barcelona.

“I needed a change and new motivation. I needed to play as many matches as possible and have consistency, which is what I’ve been lacking these past few years to make the leap,” he argued.

Notably, Pena has already featured in two matches for Elche this season, showing his determination to secure regular playing time.
