Park Bench, the US investment fund partnered with Sparta Capital on a proposed takeover of Girondins de Bordeaux, has withdrawn after the club’s exclusion from all national competitions was confirmed.

The fund said in a statement that its offer was conditional on Bordeaux competing in national competitions, so it would not proceed with the transaction.

It added that running the club in Régional 1 while servicing existing debt and honouring the restructuring plan would be extremely difficult, and pressing on would risk making promises it could not keep with certainty.

On Thursday, the French Football Federation’s executive committee refused to readmit Bordeaux to National 2.

While the club had strongly challenged that decision on its social channels, Park Bench struck a more measured note, saying it was disappointed but respected the decision and the role of the institutions.

The development moves the six-time French champions closer to possible judicial liquidation if no new buyer emerges in the coming days.
