Peñarol have decided to buy Matías Arezo from Grêmio by triggering their option for three point five million dollars, with the clause expiring on 30 June. According to Globo.com, the Uruguayan club want to agree fresh terms with the striker before executing payment by the end of the month.

Club directors reached consensus in a meeting on Tuesday without the need for a vote. Finalising the player’s contract is the next step.

River Plate, of Uruguay, own 50% of Arezo’s economic rights and are claiming half of the sum due to Grêmio. The Uruguayan club have not received 100,000 dollars, their share of the first instalment of the loan fee.

A formal notice has been sent to Grêmio, and if the payment remains outstanding River plan to notify FIFA on Monday. FIFA would then order the debt to be settled within 45 days, otherwise the club face a transfer ban until it is paid.

The 400,000 dollars loan fee for 2026 is included within the purchase sum.

Arezo has scored nine goals in 23 matches for Peñarol in 2026 and helped win the Supercopa Uruguaia this year. The centre-forward joined Grêmio in July 2024 but never secured a regular starting place. From mid 2025 he pushed for a move to Peñarol, where he had shone in 2023.

He made 37 appearances and scored six goals for the Porto Alegre side, who paid three million euros, R$ 17 million at the time, to sign him from Granada in Spain.
