Sunderland accelerated their pre-season with a 2-0 victory at RC Lens, a memorable opening to their European adventure. According to Sunderland Echo, the trip married footballing purpose with a celebration of shared mining heritage.

Lens wore its colours proudly, from streamers and murals in the centre to the Bollaert-Delelis overlooking former slag heaps, a city that lives its club.

Earlier at CS Avion, a youthful Sunderland side with a few senior heads struck first through Tom Proctor. Two penalties were missed and another strong claim was turned down, and though Melker Ellborg saved superbly, the heat told as a strong Lens reserve team made their pressure count.

Back at Bollaert, queues snaked for the new kit as home and away fans mingled, a visiting supporter laying flowers to honour historic solidarity from Lens miners. At half-time ‘Les Corons’ followed ‘Wise Men Say’ and the 1,500 travelling Sunderland fans were applauded, though heavy-handed stewarding caused long entry delays.

On the pitch Sunderland were controlled, composed and ultimately clinical. Afterwards Régis Le Bris ruled out a move for Wilson Isidor and outlined injuries, any transfer frustration not evident as he voiced confidence in his squad, while Thomas Meunier spoke enthusiastically about his move and role. The mood leaving town mixed anticipation with disbelief, and some on Wearside may even cheer Lens against PSG on Sunday.
