Gonzalo Plata has been withdrawn from Ecuador’s friendlies after sustaining a functional muscle injury, the federation announced.

He felt pain during Flamengo’s 2-1 win over Bragantino at the Maracanã on Sunday, and was replaced in the 45th minute of the second half.

He was re-assessed on Tuesday at Ninho do Urubu. Imaging showed no visible fibre damage, and the problem is in the back of his right thigh. Club and national-team medics agreed he would remain in Rio for treatment.

The cut was confirmed overnight after Flamengo had notified the national team. Kevin Rodríguez was also ruled out with a hamstring injury, classified as BAMIC 2B. Anthony Valencia travelled in the early hours of Monday.

Ecuador will play South Korea on Thursday at eight Brasília time, then Japan the following Thursday, the first, at seven ten, with both matches away. A third friendly is yet to be confirmed.

Flamengo return on eight October away to Santos in the Campeonato Brasileiro, then face Fluminense on 11 before starting their Libertadores semi-final on Thursday 15 in La Plata.
