Porto Alegre is weighing a purpose-built stadium for women’s football as a 2027 Women’s World Cup legacy, though Grêmio and Internacional differ on its feasibility.
According to Globo.com, the embryonic plan would create a shared hub for matches and activities for Grêmio, Inter and other metropolitan clubs.
Funding is the first hurdle. The city has no budget, so any move would need the clubs and private investors. World Cup official Débora Garcia says an area is being assessed and talks with the duo are planned, but viability depends on external finance.
The blueprint includes fixed dressing rooms for each club and space for visitors, aiming to end the lack of a defined home. Inter currently uses Sesc Protásio Alves and at times the Futebol com Vida base in Vimão.
Grêmio trains at the Complexo Esportivo da Ulbra in Canoas and this year the Mosqueteiras shifted home matches to São José’s Passo D’Areia. Facilities and the synthetic pitch there have been criticised, and building fan connection remains difficult.
Inter manager Renata Armiliato argues a dedicated venue could meet rising demand over the next five to 10 years. Training can adapt, she says, but competition standards are stricter and main stadiums will not always be available.
Grêmio executive Bárbara Fonseca urges caution, citing unresolved legal and operational questions on ownership, scheduling and revenue. She floats incentives for games at main arenas, potentially with CBF support, adding the women’s game does not yet pay for itself.
