Prosecutor updates on probe into ex-Corinthians president's spending

On the afternoon of this Sunday (23), São Paulo Public Prosecutor Cássio Conserino, who is investigating the use of corporate cards during the last three Corinthians administrations – Andrés Sanchez (2018-2020), Duílio Monteiro Alves (2021-2023), and Augusto Melo (2024-2025) – was interviewed by the program Domingol on CNN Brasil.

During the interview, the prosecutor was asked about the stage of the investigation into the expenses of former president Duílio Monteiro Alves’ administration – R$ 80,000 spent in 40 days, according to a report by ge.globo. It is worth remembering that, recently, Andrés Sanchez was charged by the São Paulo Public Prosecutor’s Office for embezzlement, money laundering, and falsification of tax documents. In addition, he was asked to reimburse the club R$ 480,000 for such expenses.

Roberto Gaviolli, financial manager during Andrés Sanchez’s administration and who had returned to the club during Osmar Stabile’s administration, was charged with embezzlement and money laundering. Regarding Duílio Monteiro Alves, the former president was heard by the São Paulo Public Prosecutor’s Office over the past week.

“The investigations are at an advanced stage of proceedings. I have already heard Duílio. (Roberto) Gavioli (former financial manager of Corinthians) also had the opportunity to make a statement and did so in writing, even accepting a suggestion from us at the Public Prosecutor’s Office, because the facts are identical to those of Andrés. It is about to be concluded. A few details are missing. I can anticipate that the work will be done with technical rigor, legality, and judicial propriety, respecting the limits of ample defense and the rights of the Constitution,” he said.

Throughout the investigations, the prosecutor split the investigations and began to look into possible irregularities of the cited former presidents separately. To CNN, he also explained the reason for the separation: “It started with two topics: use of corporate cards and use of fake invoices by the last three presidents. So, we have six criminal investigative procedures.”

“Why did I split them? Because you can’t insert different people in different time contexts. There would be no way to investigate the entire history in a single procedure, which is why we have six procedures,” he concluded.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office had recommended the removal of the three former presidents from any Corinthians body, so there would be no interference during the investigations. Shortly after being charged, Andrés Sanchez – a lifetime counselor and ex officio member of the Guidance Council (CORI) – requested to step down from the Deliberative Council.

Duílio Monteiro Alves, like Sanchez, is a lifetime counselor and ex officio member of CORI. Augusto Melo, in turn, was removed by the Council and the General Assembly of Members – after developments in the VaideBet Case, he lost his political rights at Parque São Jorge and no longer holds any position at the club.
