Racing Santander supporters used the celebrations at El Sardinero to urge on-loan midfielder Peio Canales to remain for another season.

According to El Correo, during the squad presentation Marco Sangalli acted as master of ceremonies and the crowd repeatedly chanted for Canales to stay.

The 20-year-old acknowledged the ovation, applauded the crowd and embraced his team-mates.

The Barrika native has flourished in a more advanced role, operating mainly as an attacking midfielder rather than deeper in the centre. He has five goals and eight assists, and his market value has risen from one million last summer at Athletic to eight million today.

Canales will return to Athletic this summer, and all signs point to him not going back out on loan. He was considered as a possible winter addition amid numerous midfield absences under Valverde, but the board declined to trigger the recall clause and he stayed in Santander.
