We’re not sure what good can come of Willie Collum’s appearance on Sky Sports on Friday night. The Scottish referees’ chief will be personally attending Sky Sports Football’s Referee Watch and will personally express his case regarding Nick Walsh and VAR’s failure to send off Austin Trusty. Willie Collum on Sky Sports can’t work out.
The problem of course is Collum is not going to throw his referees under the bus – he is not going to admit Walsh got it wrong and VAR should have intervened.
He will have his men’s back, and in fairness your boss having your back is what earns loyalty from them.
We always expect football managers to have their players’ back and support them, so this isn’t a lot different.
Collum isn’t going to admit an error occurred which cost Rangers, he will defend and further justify the decision made.
This will make no one happy – not even Celtic fans, because any call going against them in the future will have much the same outcome.
No accountability and no concession of error.
That two of the three independent panel agreed it was a red will make no difference to Collum. He will state his case despite knowing he and his people are wrong.
We mean, he could surprise us all by blowing it all open and admitting there was a mistake. About as much chance of reversing the decision and replaying the match in fairness.
But he could.
But no, he won’t.
He will defend his men, his VAR setup, and Scottish refereeing will remain in the pit as a result. Jobs for the boys, defending your mates… it’s all very teenage and immature. Willie Collum on Sky Sports is hardly going to solve problems.
But that’s Scottish football for you.
