Real Madrid footballer Raúl Asencio has been convicted of a road safety offence after being stopped driving his Porsche under the influence in the south of Gran Canaria.

The incident occurred on 16 August during a routine checkpoint in the island’s southern summer leisure areas. According to Canarias7, the breath test returned 0.90 mg/l against a 0.25 mg/l limit, while Atlántico Hoy first reported the case.

He was processed through a fast-track procedure in San Bartolomé de Tirajana and handed a €14,400 fine, plus an eight-month driving ban.

The ruling comes at a delicate time for Asencio. He and three former Real Madrid academy players, Ferrán Ruiz, Juan Rodríguez and Andrés García, are on trial from Thursday in Plaza número 5 de la Sección Penal del Tribunal de Instancia de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

That hearing is scheduled to continue on 4 and 7 September.
