Régis Le Bris believes Chris Rigg has made major strides since pre-season and could soon earn more opportunities for Sunderland.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 19-year-old has had limited minutes so far, starting only the 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Hull City and making three late appearances from the bench in other games. He impressed in pre-season, with several team-mates returning late from World Cup commitments.

Speaking earlier this season, Le Bris said Sunderland had focused early on their right-sided triangle, a key part of their play, so those involved were ready to feature. He compared Rigg’s start this season to last and called it a huge improvement, citing increased football level and personal maturity.

The head coach views him as a strong option from the bench and adds that, if he seizes his chance, he might start soon.

Le Bris also linked Rigg’s upturn to confidence, noting that when belief grows a player can look bigger, sharper and quicker, which he feels is now the case. With the Black Cats set to play seven times in 21 days after the current international break, further chances could emerge.
