In a recent report, Correio da Manhã (via Sport Witness) offered an update on Sunderland and their pursuit of Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo. It has been mentioned that the Portuguese club are willing to offer the Mozambique wide player a significant pay rise to fend off interest from the Black Cats.

Catamo’s Decent Numbers In Portuguese Football

Catamo enjoyed a good run of form at the Portuguese club in the previous campaign when he put in a handful of impressive displays on the right side of their attack. The Mozambique talent scored eight goals and secured five assists in 47 matches for Sporting last season in various competitions.

The 25-year-old is currently among the most talented wide players in Liga Portugal. Hence, it is no surprise that Sunderland are showing interest in signing him.

Catamo’s current deal at the Portuguese club will run out in the summer of 2029, so the Black Cats would have to make a convincing offer if they want to recruit him next year.

What Should Sunderland Boss Regis Le Bris Do With Regards To Catamo?

Catamo is a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few driving runs with it out on the flanks. He has the vision to create some promising chances for his teammates in the final third and can shoot the ball with venom from long range.

The Mozambique talent can even contribute by scoring and creating a handful of crucial goals for his team. Catamo is primarily a right-winger but can also function as a left-sided wide player if told to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if the Black Cats manage to snap him up next year.

We can expect Catamo to bring more quality and depth to Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris’ frontline. He is capable of fighting for regular first-team football at the Stadium of Light.

At 25, Catamo has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a good option for the Wearside club to consider this January or next summer. Hence, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris would be wise to step up his efforts by making a big offer for him in 2027.
