Régis Le Bris says Sunderland are pushing to strengthen but intend to keep transfer work discreet to remain efficient.

The Black Cats lost 4-2 to Liverpool in their second pre-season match in Nashville on Saturday evening. According to Sunderland Echo, Thomas Meunier is still the only summer signing as the club prioritises stability.

Le Bris said last week he wants three or four core additions before the deadline and that total arrivals could reach six or seven. After the Liverpool defeat he stressed that business will be handled out of sight and noted this window differs from last season when 14 newcomers were required.

He also addressed Granit Xhaka’s situation for the first time this summer, calling the matter closed. Chelsea had bid to reunite Xhaka with their new head coach Xabi Alonso and, though initially open to the move, the midfielder informed Sunderland he would stay.

Le Bris added that Xhaka has been unequivocal, loves the club, wants to remain and help shape its future, and is a strong leader. During Switzerland’s run to the World Cup quarter finals, Xhaka said Sunderland felt like home from the start, that his family were very happy, that he had chosen to stay, and that he was ready to make history with the team.
