Renato Veiga’s late equaliser for Villarreal spelled frustration for Juventus in the Champions League, as the Old Lady surrendered a 2-1 lead right at the death after initially fighting back from being 1-0 down themselves.

Veiga, who was on loan at Juve during the second half of last season, powered an unstoppable header past Mattia Perin before an impassioned celebration really turned heads.

Tuttomercatoweb were quick to press further regarding the Brazilian’s ear-cupping symbol against his brief former employers. The outlet spoke exclusively with the defender’s agent, Gaetano Montalbano, to find out more.

“Renato is very happy with his performance, with his incredibly intense, high-level performance,” the agent began. “It wasn’t easy to get back in the game, but he did well to believe in it and find the goal. He was happy to have scored, as he always tries to create opportunities from set pieces.”

Regarding that now infamous celebration, Montalbano continued, lifting the lid on the player’s relationship with the giants of Turin.

“Rarely have we seen such a bond formed in such a short time between a player and an environment like Juventus. The relationship between Veiga and the Bianconeri was strong and intense, even in the short term. It remains a vivid memory even today. Then, of course, there’s the pitch, and everyone must be professional and do their job with maximum commitment, as he did last night. Juventus fans know how dedicated Veiga is to his work; they saw it last year.

“They recognised Renato’s character, leadership, and personality. Things you don’t buy at the supermarket: his respect and affection will remain.”

Veiga, himself, spoke about his decision to celebrate. Explaining it simply as an outpouring of emotion, the former Chelsea man claimed, “I spoke to almost all the Juventus players after the match. I love them all, and they told me the same. They’re a team with great players, but above all, great men.

“Juventus will always have a big place in my heart. I scored and celebrated, but that’s just who I am, I live the game intensely. I didn’t mean to disrespect anyone; I had a short but wonderful time at Juve. I want to tell the Juventus fans: I live football intensely.”
