Renato’s Grêmio return faces Palmeiras without Abel as he defends 20 September streak | OneFootball

According to Globo.com, Renato opened his new tenure by telling fans not to boo.

In his fifth spell, this is his 20th meeting with Palmeiras, with 10 defeats, five draws and four wins. The latest came on 21 September 2023 in the 24th round at the Arena, sealed by right-back João Pedro.

That was his only Grêmio win over Abel. He also lost a Copa do Brasil title and a Conmebol Libertadores title to him, the latter with Flamengo, and across his last 10 meetings with Abel for Flamengo, Grêmio, Fluminense and Vasco he has two wins.

Renato is unbeaten on 20 September with two wins and a draw, that stalemate against Palmeiras in 2020. Across 18 to 22 September he has seven wins, two draws and one defeat, including progress to the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals in 2016 and Libertadores semi-finals in 2017, campaigns that ended with trophies.

Kick-off is at 11:00 on Sunday, a full Arena expected for Renato’s return. Palmeiras are pushing to regain top spot, while Grêmio need a win to avoid finishing the round in the Z-4.
