Brice Samba’s booking in Rennes’ 4-2 defeat at Lyon leaves him set to miss the final-day trip to Marseille on 17 May, a pivotal game for European qualification. According to L'Équipe, the club have asked the LFP disciplinary commission, which meets Wednesday, to rescind it.
The flashpoint came on 40 minutes when Endrick released Afonso Moreira, chased by Mousa al-Tamari. As the OL forward tried to go right around the keeper, he was clipped from behind then collided with Samba. Corentin Tolisso scored the penalty on 42 minutes and the keeper collected a fifth booking.
Samba said referee Clément Turpin told him Al-Tamari had fouled, so he asked why he was booked. He insisted he tried to avoid contact, felt the card was the easy option, and hoped a review could remove it. He also maintained he did not touch the attacker.
Turpin later told coach Franck Haise there had been two contacts and there would be no change. Haise believed Mousa’s contact was greater and said they might have to do without Samba unless the caution is annulled. Had Al-Tamari been booked, he would have missed the Vélodrome trip for accumulation.
Pending the verdict, 20-year-old Mathys Silistrie could start in Marseille. He has played the Coupe de France round of 32 against Sables VF, a 3-0 win, and a Ligue 1 match on 7 February at Lens, a 1-3 defeat, under Habib Beye. That experience may help in a hostile setting.
