Nottingham Forest Eyeing Danilho Doekhi as Pereira Plans Defensive Rebuild

Nottingham Forest’s summer planning appears to be moving with purpose, and the latest name under consideration speaks clearly to the priorities at the City Ground. According to Sports Boom, Forest have “sounded out the availability of Union Berlin defender Danilho Doekhi” as Vitor Pereira looks to strengthen his squad before the new Premier League season.

The 27-year-old Dutch centre-back is not the most obvious headline-grabbing target, but he may be one of the more sensible ones. At 6ft 3in, experienced in the Bundesliga, and entering what should be his peak years, Doekhi fits the profile of a defender who could immediately compete in England.

Sports Boom report that Doekhi is “highly admired by Forest boss Pereira”, with the Portuguese manager eager to add “strength, leadership and top-flight experience” to his back line. That combination matters. Forest have spent recent seasons living too close to the bottom of the Premier League table, and while attacking flair often dominates recruitment talk, defensive reliability is usually what separates survival from another exhausting scrap.

Doekhi Profile Makes Sense

Doekhi’s appeal lies in more than height and physicality. Forest’s interest also comes with context. Murillo and Nikola Milenković have both attracted transfer attention this summer, and Forest know the market can change quickly. If one of their first-choice centre-backs leaves, replacing authority with authority becomes essential.

Union Berlin are expected to value Doekhi at around £22million, according to Sports Boom. In today’s market, that is not insignificant, but it is hardly excessive for a proven centre-back with European experience and Premier League suitability.

No formal offer has yet been made, but the report states Forest’s interest is “genuine”, with “discussions continuing behind the scenes”. That phrasing suggests this is not yet at the advanced stage, but it is more than idle scouting.

Leeds United were also reportedly tracking Doekhi earlier in the window, though their interest has cooled. That leaves Forest well placed if they decide to act. Timing may now become important. A player open to a Premier League move, a selling club with a defined valuation, and a manager keen to reinforce, that is often how a deal begins to gather momentum.

Pereira Needs Stability

Pereira’s arrival in February came amid turbulence, with Sports Boom noting he became Forest’s fourth manager of a difficult campaign. Having kept the club in the Premier League, he now needs a squad that reflects a clearer plan.

Doekhi would not solve everything, but he would represent a logical step. Forest require defenders who can defend their box, handle aerial pressure, and remain composed when games turn frantic. Those are the moments that often define seasons at the lower end of the table.

From a Nottingham Forest perspective, this feels like the kind of link worth taking seriously. Danilho Doekhi is not a flashy name designed to sell shirts, but he sounds like a defender who could make Forest harder to play against, and that has to be the priority.

The biggest concern is obvious. If Murillo or Nikola Milenković go, Forest cannot be left scrambling late in the window. They need succession planning, not panic buying. Doekhi looks like a player who could either add real competition now or become a direct replacement if one of the current centre-backs leaves.

At £22million, the price is interesting. It is a serious fee, but not wild by Premier League standards. If Pereira wants leadership, aerial power and composure, this is the type of profile Forest should be targeting.

There is also something reassuring about signing a player who has captained Vitesse and then handled the Bundesliga. Forest need characters as much as talent. Last season had too much instability, too many resets, too much firefighting.

Doekhi would not be a glamorous signing, but he could be a grown-up one. For a club that badly needs calm, structure and defensive authority, that might matter more.
