Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs has delivered a defiant response to intensifying rumours linking him with a move to Chelsea.
Roefs has enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in English football so far, with his performances reportedly catching the eye of Todd Boehly’s recruitment team as they search for a long-term solution in goal.
Speculation has reached fever pitch in the wake of reports that Chelsea are prepared to test Sunderland’s resolve with a bid of around £50 million.
Liam Rosenior’s side are believed to be searching for a goalkeeper with strong distribution and command of the area, qualities Roefs has showcased in abundance since his arrival from the Eredivisie.
However, the 23-year-old was quick to downplay any noise of a move away this summer, insisting his focus remains firmly on Wearside.
“I don’t know what to make of it. I don’t hear anything from it from my agents,” Roefs was quoted as saying by The Northern Echo.
“As long as I don’t know anything about it, they can read or write what they want. I don’t know.”
While many young players might be tempted by the lure of Stamford Bridge, Roefs remains grounded despite his rapid rise.
Having only recently made the step up to the Premier League, he is prioritising game time and the unique environment being fostered at the Stadium of Light.
“Obviously, it’s a compliment if people write it about you. I’m really not into this,” he added.
“It’s my first season in the Premier League. I’m really enjoying every single minute of it, so I’m not thinking of anything else.”
With Roefs under a long-term contract and Sunderland pushing for a European spot, the club are under no financial pressure to sell their prized asset.
For Chelsea, landing the Dutchman may require more than just a sizeable transfer fee—they will have to persuade a player who appears to be fully invested in the Black Cats’ project.
