With Dejphon Chansiri gone and David Storch in his place, the Owls are working hard behind the scenes so that the club have a quality squad to challenge in the third tier, with a significant number of incomings required.

There have been rumours that Jamie Vardy could return to Hillsborough, where he spent his fledgling years, but such a deal would be tough to complete given the potential finances.

However, one former player could be set to return to the club in the form of Ross Wallace, who spent three years at the South Yorkshire outfit between 2015 and 2018.

The Owls are putting everything in place for the 2026/27 season, from first-team recruitment to coaching staff, and it seems that Wallace could return to Hillsborough to make an impact on the youth setup.

The Scot would be interested in the Under-18s Professional Development Phase (PDP) manager role at Sheffield Wednesday, according to journalist Dom Howson on X.

Wallace recently helped guide Burnley Women to the National League North title and has held coaching roles at Burnley and Fleetwood Town in recent years after hanging up his boots.

The 41-year-old enjoyed a fruitful stint at Wednesday, having signed from Burnley on a free transfer in the summer of 2015, making 124 appearances for the club.

He was an all-or-nothing type of player who would give everything for the badge and contributed 13 goals and 20 assists as the Owls narrowly missed out on Championship promotion twice during his spell.

Why Wallace could play key role in Wednesday's future

Given how thin on the ground Henrik Pedersen's current squad is looking, Sheffield Wednesday are going to need to sign a host of players this summer.

Of course, the upcoming window should be an anomaly in that regard, as once the club have a settled squad, then they can look to develop the players on their books rather than churn through them.

With that in mind, the Owls should place a greater emphasis on their academy as a way of generating talent without having to spend significant funds.

That is where Wallace could become an integral part of the club's youth system, as he can use his experience and success at Hillsborough to develop and nurture young talent.

Looking at the former winger's it is clear to see why the South Yorkshire side would want to bring Wallace back, as he has already been a success, having lifted silverware with Burnley Women.

Thinking ahead, if the 41-year-old were to be a success at youth level, then there would be a clear pathway for him to become a first-team coach and maybe even head coach one day.

News of a potential return for Wallace should delight fans as he knows the club, played with his heart on his sleeve and made a genuine impact during his playing career.
