The post-match fallout from the Leeds United game on Sunday is threatening the engulf Manchester United, and could potentially derail the season.
Ruben Amorim came out with a bizarre rant as his team fought back to claim a point away at Elland Road.
The head coach suggested that he lacked the power to make key decisions, and was not being backed in the transfer market, while also being asked to shift from his preferred system.
“I just want to say that I’m going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach. And I was really clear on that. And that is going to finish in 18 months, and then everyone is going to move on. That was the deal.”
Those comments have not gone down well among the INEOS hierarchy with Talksport reporting that the head coach’s future now hangs in the balance.
A power struggle with director of football Jason Wilcox has emerged behind the scenes, with the former Manchester City man directing the Portuguese tactician to change his rigid style.
The win over Newcastle and the improved second-half display against Leeds are clear examples that a shift to a four at the back suits the current injury-riddled squad.
The Antoine Semenyo saga has also upset Amorim, who wants INEOS to go and spend big on other areas during January.
However, with most big names unlikely to jump ship mid-season, they are reluctant to back the head coach with more signings tailored to his specific style.
“Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United is in the balance after his explosive press conference on Sunday, talkSPORT understands.
“Amorim’s fractured relationship with director of football Jason Wilcox is viewed by sources close to United as making his long-term position uncertain.
“talkSPORT understands Amorim’s frustrations have boiled over after United’s top brass including Wilcox urged him to be more tactically flexible.
“If it comes down to a power struggle between Amorim and Wilcox chief executive Omar Berrada is expected to back the latter.
“Amorim also feels promises he would be allowed to his squad in this transfer window have been broken, with United now planning a quiet January.”
It has been a difficult few weeks, both on and off the pitch, for the 20-time English league champions, with injuries and AFCON meaning the squad has been stretched way too thin.
And the results have taken a beating, with Ruben Amorim’s adamant stance regarding his own tactical style not really helping matters.
The INEOS hierarchy are far from pleased with the lack of tactical flexibility and Christopher Vivell went to great lengths to point that out after the Fulham game earlier in the season.
The entire episode is eerily similar to the Enzo Maresca saga that erupted at Chelsea recently. And everything points towards a similar conclusion.
