AC Milan’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek suffered a broken jaw after a heavy collision with Parma goalkeeper Edoardo Corvi during Milan’s 0-1 defeat on Sunday.
The incident came in the opening moments after an Alexis Saelemaekers cross, as Corvi advanced in an uncontrolled manner and his head struck the midfielder’s face. Loftus-Cheek was taken off on a stretcher minutes later. According to L'Équipe, he did not lose consciousness and was taken straight to hospital.
He has fractures to the alveolar bone, which supports the teeth, and may also have lost several teeth.
The injury should keep him out for several months, and could threaten his chances of playing at the World Cup with England.
He had been called up by Thomas Tuchel for the penultimate camp in October. The former Chelsea midfielder, 30, is due to undergo surgery on Monday morning.
