Sheffield United have confirmed the dismissal of head coach Ruben Selles after a nightmare start to the Championship season, with the club rooted to the bottom of the table and without a single point from their opening five matches.

The final straw came on Friday night at Portman Road, where the Blades were dismantled 5-0 by Ipswich Town. The result left fans furious and accelerated the board’s decision to make a managerial change just weeks into the campaign.

Sheffield United Owners Release Statement

In an official club statement released on Saturday morning, the board explained:

“Sheffield United Football Club’s board of directors have opted to make a change at managerial level.

After a disappointing start to the EFL Championship campaign, Ruben Selles has been relieved of his duties as manager.

Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position.

The board of directors wish to thank Mr Selles for his hard work.

A new manager will be named in due course.”

It hasn’t taken long for speculation to turn into substance. Multiple outlets, including Sky Sports and Pete O’Rourke, report that former Blades boss Chris Wilder has agreed to return to Bramall Lane, less than 100 days after being dismissed by COH Sports following the disappointment of losing the Championship play-off final at the end of May.

If confirmed, Wilder will inherit a squad short on confidence, struggling for goals, and already under pressure to climb away from the relegation zone. His immediate task will be to galvanise the club and the dressing room, something he’s done successfully in his previous two stints at his boyhood club.

The Blades face Charlton Athletic at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon in what could be Wilder’s first game back in charge of United, just a few months after COH Sports decided to part ways with the legendary Blades manager. Despite this, it is thought that Wilder has still maintained a good relationship with the current board members.
