James McClean’s farewell to Wrexham has reignited debate over the 'Disney FC' tag, and the owners’ response has been to embrace it in their own words.
According to Wales Online, the 36-year-old left by mutual consent to rejoin hometown club Derry City after a highly successful spell, thanking Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, formerly McElhenney, in a message that nodded to 'Disney FC'. He played more than 100 games, helped deliver back-to-back promotions, and said his reduced minutes this season did not sour a classy exit.
The nickname has followed Wrexham since Reynolds and Mac completed their takeover in February 2021, during a rise from the National League to the Championship with three straight promotions. Global interest exploded through the Disney+ series Welcome to Wrexham, fuelling rival taunts.
In the latest series, they tackled the jibe head-on, titling an episode after it. Reynolds listed playful similarities, from parades to merchandise, while Mac admitted a first trip to Disneyland overturned his scepticism.
Mac then turned combative, inviting everyone to enjoy the tale of Disney FC before telling jaded critics, in expletive-laden terms, to get lost. He also offered a tongue-in-cheek apology to clubs they did not choose and, alongside Reynolds, wrapped up with gags and rude gestures.
Later he struck a softer note, saying they understand why the label sticks but rejecting any idea their success is manufactured. For him, Wrexham feels like sustained magic, both in their four years and across the club’s long history.
