According to El Correo, controversy erupted in the fourth minute at San Mamés when an Athletic penalty for a Lucas Torró handball was overturned on VAR review, leaving the home crowd incredulous and angry.

The move began with Andoni Gorosabel stealing possession, which led to a corner. At the near post Gorka Guruzeta headed goalwards and, before the ball reached Iñaki Williams, it struck Torró’s hand.

Referee Víctor García Verdura immediately pointed to the spot. VAR official Carlos del Cerro Grande called for a review, and after consulting the monitor the decision was cancelled.

The VAR rationale was that the hand position was not considered unnatural and there was no intent to increase his body volume.

Even so, the scene remains debatable, with the arm away from the body, the ball altering direction and stopping it reaching Williams, who was set to finish.
