Santos have withdrawn from their move for left-back Emerson Palmieri after Olympique de Marseille chose to keep him.

According to Globo.com, the player failed to persuade Marseille’s hierarchy to release him during talks in France on Tuesday, the final day of the window there. The club informed Santos it would retain the defender, who has been a starter at the beginning of this season.

Palmieri had an agreement in place with Santos, but it relied on ending his contract with Marseille. Santos were not willing to pay a fee and needed a free release to complete the deal.

In the final year of his contract, the left-back had been allowed at the end of last season to seek a new destination, but the French side changed its stance in recent days. The 32-year-old has played abroad since 2014.

While the player’s camp still hopes for a late twist before 11, the day the Brazilian transfer window closes, both clubs consider the matter closed.

Santos are now focused on finalising paperwork to confirm right-back Rodinei, who will be their second mid-year signing. On Monday the club announced midfielder Arthur, formerly of Grêmio.
