Emerson Palmieri has waived money owed to him in a bid to terminate his Olympique de Marseille contract and return to Santos. According to Diario Do Peixe, the left-back already has an agreement with the Brazilian club, but any move depends on Marseille releasing him.

Palmieri is contracted to Marseille until mid-2027. The French club were initially unwilling to let him leave without compensation, while Santos do not intend to buy his rights.

Talks aim to complete the termination by 19:00 Brasília time on Tuesday, when the main European transfer windows, including France, close.

Marseille resisted a free exit because there is little time to register a replacement before the French deadline, hence their demand for a fee. With Santos unwilling to pay, the player’s camp sought a contractual termination to clear the path.

Brazil’s window runs until 11 September, but he cannot simply cut ties after Europe shuts and sign in Brazil. His exit must be formalised within the French federation’s registration period to arrive as a free agent, under CBF rules for foreign departures.

Palmieri, who has Italian and Brazilian nationality, came through Santos before moving to Europe in 2014. He later represented clubs in Italy, England and France, won Euro 2020 with Italy, and joined Marseille in 2025.

While awaiting clarity on Palmieri, Santos are also closing on Rodinei after his Olympiacos release, and on Monday announced the signing of midfielder Arthur.
