Santos of Neymar Jr. ‘to move for’ ex-Benfica defender Lucas Veríssimo before deadline

A Bola reports that Santos, where Neymar Jr. plays, are working to sign centre-back Lucas Veríssimo from Al Duhail, with the Brazilian window closing today.

The São Paulo club want defensive reinforcements and have targeted the former Benfica player, who spent two seasons with the Portuguese side. Any agreement would need to be finalised by the end of 3 March.

Talks with the Qatari club have intensified in recent hours as Santos try to complete the deal. An earlier attempt to secure Veríssimo on loan was rejected.

The club are understood to be more confident now, taking into account rising tensions in the Middle East that affect the region where Al Duhail are based.

If the deadline passes, Brazilian clubs will, until 27 March, only be able to register players who have featured in state championships.
