Santos president Marcelo Teixeira says Gabigol’s fine form will not block a possible stay, and talks with Cruzeiro will come at the right moment.
According to Globo.com, Teixeira believes the striker’s surge will not hinder negotiations and said Santos will approach Cruzeiro when the time is right.
Santos came from behind to beat São Paulo 2-1 at Morumbis on Friday in the 21st round of the Campeonato Brasileiro, with Gabigol scoring both. The forward’s current deal at the club runs only until December.
Gabigol has 23 goals and 10 assists this season for Santos during his loan. He remains contracted to Cruzeiro until the end of 2028, with two years left, so keeping him next season will be difficult.
Teixeira added that the player’s preference will carry weight, and that finances are fundamental. He noted Cruzeiro loaned him out because he was not in their plans, while he fitted Santos’, and said the clubs will sit down after the season to seek a solution.
Uncertainty for 2027 extends beyond Gabigol, with Arthur, Philippe Coutinho and Everton Cebolinha also only contracted until the end of the campaign, and coach Cuca’s future likewise unclear. Teixeira said renewals are hard to advance during the club’s electoral process, and definitive agreements can only be finalised after the season.
Santos remain in the hunt for a 2027 Conmebol Libertadores berth. Victory over São Paulo lifted them to seventh in the table on 41 points.
