Sebastien Pocognoli to work with former West Brom boss Alan Irvine for Scotland | OneFootball

Sebastien Pocognoli has confirmed Alan Irvine will form part of his Scotland backroom staff, reuniting the pair from their West Brom days. The new head coach has finalised his coaching team after replacing Steve Clarke following this summer’s early World Cup exit.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, Irvine, who is also assistant to David Moyes at Everton, brought Pocognoli from Hannover in a £1.5 million deal in 2014 and will stay on after serving under Clarke.

Irvine was West Brom head coach in 2014 and left after four wins in 19 Premier League matches. Pocognoli remained at Albion until 2017, though Tony Pulis favoured others at left-back. He spent 2016/17 on loan at Brighton, then re-signed for Standard Liege at the end of that season.

Pocognoli said Irvine had signed him for West Brom in 2014 and that he could not have foreseen working together with Scotland. He expressed delight that Irvine agreed to continue, praising his passion, training-ground quality and the respect he commands. He also highlighted Irvine’s more than 30 years in coaching and recent FIFA World Cup experience.

Former Belgium assistant coach Luke Benstead and Cameron Campbell, Tottenham’s first-team individual development coach, complete the three-strong assistant group. Pocognoli will name his first squad on Tuesday for four Nations League matches against Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia twice.
