Pierce Charles was already out of action, and their absences left Henrik Pedersen short of goalkeeper options.

This led to the EFL sanctioning a deal with Middlesbrough to bring the Senegal international to Hillsborough on a short-term basis.

The 31-year-old had fallen out of favour at the Riverside, and was not even registered as part of their 25-man squad following the close of the January transfer market.

Dieng made three appearances for the Owls during his short stay with the club, playing in defeats to Sheffield United, Norwich City and Southampton.

These were his first games in the Championship since a 3-1 loss for Middlesbrough against Leeds United in December 2024.

Dieng’s time at Sheffield Wednesday has come to an end following the return from injury of Charles, who has been out of action since playing in a 3-0 loss to QPR on 4 January.

The goalkeeper has issued a message to supporters thanking them for backing him through the last few weeks, with the club offering him a rare opportunity for game time in what’s been a difficult 18 months for his career.

“Thank you to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday and the incredible fans,” wrote Dieng, via Instagram.

Liam Cooper responded to the goalkeeper's message, wishing him well with what comes next in his career.

"Topman, go well mate," replied the defender.

Dieng was first choice goalkeeper for Middlesbrough when he joined from QPR in the 2023 summer transfer window, but he has since fallen out of favour and he has not featured once under Kim Hellberg.

The Teesside outfit are fighting for promotion to the Premier League this season, with Sol Brynn preferred as their shot-stopper instead.

Joe Wildsmith, Jon McLaughlin and Tom Glover are all ahead of Dieng in the pecking order, who still has a contract with the Championship side until June 2027.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have already had their relegation to League One confirmed in what has been a very difficult season for the club.

The Owls are bottom of the table with minus seven points, with the EFL giving them two points deduction penalties worth a total of 18.

Pedersen’s side are on a 12-game losing streak, and have won just once all campaign, with the Yorkshire outfit currently in administration.

Sheffield Wednesday will return to action on Saturday with a trip to face eighth-place Derby County at Pride Park in a 3pm kick-off.

Seny Dieng emergency loan was useful for all parties

Dieng stepped into Pedersen’s side for three games, and the deal proved beneficial for all parties as it offered the goalkeeper a chance to get some minutes under his belt.

He’s been out of the team at Middlesbrough for quite some time, and he was set to remain unavailable for selection until the summer before Sheffield Wednesday stepped in, so there’s no doubt he enjoyed this change of scenery.

It’s a sign of where the Owls are that they needed an emergency loan at all, but they were able to move quickly and bring in an experienced shot-stopper, which was a good piece of business.

Perhaps it could even open the door for his return to Hillsborough at a later date if a new goalkeeper is needed in the near future.
