Chris Wilder’s return to the Bramall Lane dugout didn’t bring the lift Sheffield United supporters craved, as the Blades slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Charlton Athletic. A late goal from Isaac Olaofe sealed United’s fate, extending their losing streak to eight games: equalling the longest in the club’s history.

It was another flat attacking display from the Blades, who managed just a single shot on target across 90 minutes. Meanwhile, Charlton grew stronger as the game went on and looked the likelier team to break through throughout the contest.

The visitors almost struck first before half-time, as Lloyd Jones rose highest from a corner and forced Michael Cooper into a superb save to claw away his header. Tyreece Campbell then tested Cooper with a glancing effort, while midfielder Greg Docherty drew further stops from the United keeper with two well-struck attempts.

United rarely threatened but battled to stay in the contest. However, Charlton’s pressure told in the dying minutes. A slick move saw Harvey Knibbs combine with James Bree on the right, and Bree’s low delivery was swept home by Olaofe to snatch victory in front of the travelling supporters.

Reflecting on his return, Wilder admitted to BBC Radio Sheffield that his side fell short where it mattered:

“We’ve got a bit of work to do. There’s some bits I was pleased with but a lot that needs work on the training ground. The key is not just having a positive week, it’s having the nuts to do it on a Saturday afternoon because that’s where everyone gets judged.

“I saw an honest performance but we never really showed our quality or any control on the game. The goal is a chaotic goal, a straight ball, a flick-on and then two versus two and the boy finds a pass in the 90th minute.”

Nathan Jones on Charlton’s Late Win

Speaking to BBC Radio London, Charlton boss Nathan Jones praised his side’s display in difficult conditions at Bramall Lane:

“First half, I thought we were the better team, we had the better chances. Their keeper made some great saves, but the level of performance was fantastic. We had similar opportunities to what Ipswich Town had the week before, they scored five, we only managed one. That’s a learning curve, but the way we went about it was excellent.”

Sheffield United remain the only club in the EFL yet to record a single point, and although there are plenty of points still up for grabs, the Blades are five points adrift of safety.
