Sheffield United owner Steve Rosen has revealed the wage bill and financial situation and how it ranks against the rest of the Championship in 2026/27

Sheffield United co-owner Steve Rosen remains positive about Sheffield United heading into 2026/27, with the club retaining a sizeable wage bill despite making some significant changes to the squad.

However, expectations may need to be tempered after the departures of Gus Hamer to Coventry City, Callum O'Hare to Wrexham, and Andre Brooks to Norwich City.

Those exits represent notable losses of Championship quality, particularly with Hamer and O'Hare having been important creative players.

Rosen's optimism is understandable, but the Blades now have to prove that their remaining squad can match those ambitions, rather than simply relying on their financial strength and existing reputation.

It won't be easy for a Sheffield United side lacking some of their usual firepower at the top end of the pitch, though.

Rosen disclosed details on 'Blades in America' recently. The interview was put out on Sheffield United's YouTube channel, which explains the financial details on SCR he believes to be correct, as well as his view on the club's current wage bill.

The Sheffield United owner said: "So SCR, as you've read, you can only do so much under the rules, otherwise you might get a sporting sanction. So we have 85 per cent of our revenue. Our revenue, as you know, went from Premier League revenue to parachute payment £80 million revenue.

"Now down, we're going to be in the 30s and maybe 40s. So that's all you can spend. That's your budget. Now, they threw in something, a little tease, that an owner, right, can put in £33 million.

"I'm just learning all this, so I think this is how it goes. So, £33 million over a three-year period, but in no year can an owner put in more than £15 million. To the point of — go all in, don't go all in, what are you going to do, how are you going to balance it out? That puts our wage bill capped.

"Our capped wage bill should put us in the top six or seven clubs. Certainly top 10, right? Because our revenue, we're a big club. Our attendance is within one or two thousand supporters per game. Our attendance is between 17th and 24th in all of English football.

"So we have super attendance and that's the importance to supporters. I want them to feel the time they spent giving their afternoon or their Tuesday evening or to come down and experience what they're experiencing."

For many Sheffield United supporters, the size of the wage bill will not matter nearly as much as what is being produced on the pitch. If more than £20 million has been generated through player sales this summer, there will naturally be an expectation that a competitive squad is built.

Even if financial rules mean every penny cannot be reinvested, the Blades should be competing at the right end of the Championship whenever they are in this division, particularly given the standards established during Chris Wilder's most successful spells.

The argument is therefore not simply about spending money, but ensuring the squad is good enough to meet the expectations that come with being Sheffield United. That is all that matters to them, albeit off-field issues threaten to overshadow that.

The question is over whether Sheffield United will add more to their squad now that the Championship transfer window has closed, with the club looking light in the wide attacking areas currently. Wilder spoke to The Star recently to reveal the latest on the situation.

He said: “It was a difficult window. But we brought some good players in. I talked about it, the timing of it is not always great and there’s a little bit of frustration with Callum going because we would have liked the opportunity of bringing somebody in.

“But I said to the board that I didn't want to go blind on it. We've missed out on a couple but I look at our group now and we're potentially one forward light. The other boys have got to step up to the plate.

“If people try and make some issue between me and the board, that's completely wrong. I work for the football club. We're in good nick, we're in good shape, we're possibly one light.

“We're working extremely hard now to try and get in a player who had his contract terminated, who I think would be a good addition to the football club. I'm obviously not going to say the name.

“But we've talked to him, talked to his agent, touched base with the player. He's extremely enthusiastic in wanting to come. We feel the same about the player and it will just give us that number that we are short on at the top of the pitch.

“It's close. Some finer details to be sorted out. But we're close to that unnamed player coming in over the weekend, registering before 12 o'clock on Monday to be available on Tuesday night.”
