Sheffield United are keen to bring Anel Ahemdhodzic back to Bramall Lane

Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has provided an update on Anel Ahmedhodzic’s future amid speculation over a move back to Sheffield United.

The defender spent three years at Bramall Lane before making the switch to the Eredivisie giants in the 2025 summer transfer window.

The Bosnian international made 26 appearances in the Dutch top flight last season, but was not selected for either of their opening two fixtures of the new campaign.

This has fuelled speculation of a potential exit from the club this summer, with Southampton also being linked with a move amid a £30 million asking price being placed on Taylor Harwood-Bellis' future.

Ahemdhodzic joined Sheffield United in 2022, and made 103 league appearances for the Blades, including 31 in the Premier League.

He was a key part of the side that earned automatic promotion from the Championship under Paul Heckingbottom in 2023, as well as reached the play-off final in 2025.

Van Bronckhorst has claimed that Ahmedhodzic was left out of the Feyenoord squad for their clash against Go Ahead Eagles as other options were preferred amid speculation over his future.

He has revealed that he is unsure about the defender’s future, and that he’s not been informed about any potential exit by technical director Dévy Rigaux, with just two weeks now remaining in the transfer window.

“I don’t know,” said van Bronckhorst, via FC Update.

“I haven’t spoken to Dévy about his situation or whether a transfer is on the cards.

“He wasn’t in the squad today because we opted for other players – it’s as simple as that.”

Feyenoord drew 2-2 at home to Go Ahead Eagles, with a late equaliser from the visitors costing van Brockhorst’s side all three points after initially leading 2-0 at half time.

The Dutch side won in their opening round fixture against Sparta Rotterdam, but Ahmedhodzic was also not included in the matchday squad, raising eyebrows.

It remains to be seen whether Sheffield United or Southampton can convince Feyenoord to cash in on the defender before the 1 September deadline.

Although, it’s believed that the European outfit are concerned about the centre-back’s hefty salary if he is not going to be a starter going forward, which could open the door to a sale.

How Sheffield United fans feel about Anel Ahmedhodzic return

Sheffield United fans are excited by the prospect of Ahmedhodzic returning to Bramall Lane this summer, and have urged the club to seal a deal immediately.

Supporters have claimed that it’s a move that would make a lot of sense.

Ahmedhodzic had a big impact during his first stint with the club, and now fans are hoping he will make a return.

However, some are sceptical about Sheffield United’s ability to pull off the deal, and are concerned he will end up elsewhere amid interest from Southampton.

Sheffield United have until 1 September to complete any remaining business before the market shuts.

Anel Ahmedhodzic return would be massive for Sheffield United

It’s clear that Sheffield United are in the market for defensive reinforcement after their failed pursuit of Harry Souttar from Leicester City.

But if they can instead bring back Ahmedhodzic, then that would be a great bit of business in these final weeks of the window.

The centre-back had a strong three years at Bramall Lane, and now has a year of top Eredivisie experience under his belt as well.

He could slot naturally back into Wilder’s side, as he already knows the club, the players and the coaching staff quite well after only leaving 12 months ago.
