“Show A Little Bit More Faith” – Blades Boss Sends Message to Supporters After Frustrating Loss | OneFootball

Sheffield United suffered a cruel late 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon as Raul Jimenez’s late strike secured all three points for the visitors at Bramall Lane.

The Blades produced a disciplined display for large periods of the contest and looked set to earn a deserved point against a Wolves side boasting plenty of Premier League experience and quality.

However, United were ultimately punished by a moment of quality in the closing stages, with Kieran Trippier’s inviting cutback eventually falling kindly for Jimenez, who made no mistake from close range.

Wolves started the brighter of the two sides and controlled much of the opening 20 minutes in South Yorkshire.

The visitors created an opening when Munetsi found himself in a promising central position inside the United penalty area. The midfielder connected with the ball first time but could only direct his effort straight at Michael Cooper, who gathered comfortably.

The Blades gradually began to grow into the game, particularly after the introduction of Andre Ayew and Tom Cannon.

Ayew immediately provided an attacking threat when he burst into the penalty area down the right-hand side before drilling a dangerous shot-cum-cross across goal. His effort narrowly missed the far post.

Cannon then found himself in a promising position inside the box after United worked their way forward, but the striker could only poke his effort into an empty six-yard area rather than seriously testing the Wolves goalkeeper.

Despite the lack of goals, there was an increasing feeling that the game would not finish goalless.

United had done an excellent job of limiting the visitors’ attacking threat during the second half, with Wolves struggling to create clear-cut opportunities.

But the quality available eventually told. With the game entering its final stages, Trippier found himself in space down the right and delivered an excellent first-time cutback into the danger area. Former Sheffield United midfielder Tommy Doyle was unable to get the desired connection on his effort, instead skewing the ball into the path of Jimenez. The experienced Mexican striker needed no second invitation, sweeping the ball home from just a few yards out to send the travelling supporters into celebration.

Speaking after the final whistle, Chris Wilder admitted his disappointment but insisted his side deserved something from the contest.

“Really disappointed. The amount of effort we put into it, against a top team in the division,” Wilder said to SUTV. “Come out of the Premier League, they’ve been there for ten years so yeah I don’t think we deserve [the loss], but that’s Championship football.”

The United boss also pointed to the quality Wolves were able to introduce from the bench, with Trippier and Jimenez both making an impact late in the contest. “I thought we deserved a result from our performance. We limited a very attacking team with a lot of unbelievable talents at the top of the pitch,” Wilder added.

“They’re bringing on Kieran Trippier and bringing on Jimenez later on. The second half we limited them to virtually nothing.”

However, Wilder conceded that United needed to be more ruthless in the final third after struggling to turn promising situations into clear chances. “A bit frustrated with the areas that we’ve got into; we’ve not created anything cleaner,” he said.

Sheffield United Fans Need to Show More Faith

The defeat also prompted Wilder to call for patience and greater faith in what he and his squad are attempting to build following a difficult opening to the campaign. “People need to show a little bit more faith in what we’re trying to achieve,” Wilder said. “I’m not a rookie manager, I’ve been around the Championship for a long time. My record’s pretty decent.

“It’s been a difficult start to the season, everybody understands, but we have a really good group of honest players.”

Ultimately, though, it was a case of fine margins going against the Blades. “Great ball by Trippier, fantastic cutback. We should have a player that’s in that spot, that’s the disappointing thing because it’s top-end Championship detail that decides a game,” he explained.

“He shanks it and it falls to their Mexican centre forward to stick it in front of their fans and they get a win.”

Wilder will now prepare his side for the upcoming EFL Cup trip to Fleetwood Town in midweek and then again away at Stoke City at the weekend before heading into the international break.
