Arsenal Women manager Renee Slegers has provided updates on the injuries of players Emily Fox and Manu Zinsberger.

Fox was forced off late on as the Gunners defeated Benfica to claim their first win in this season’s Champions League. “Foxy seems alright,” said Slegers. “She has a knock on the shin. I think she should be alright.”

Zinsberger was absent from the squad that travelled to Portugal. Arsenal’s boss confirmed: “Manu sustained the knee injury in training in the week.”

After a run of four games without a win, the Gunners have now claimed two victories in the last four days. The result gets their Champions League title defence back on track, after they kicked off the tournament with a home defeat.

Arsenal dominated for large portions of the match but struggled to find the breakthrough. The win was ultimately claimed courtesy of two second-half goals – one from Beth Mead and another from Alessia Russo.

Slegers reflected: “The game went in spells, but what I’m happy with is that we found a way to win.

“We didn’t create as many clear-cut chances as we would have liked, so we had to find other ways to get the result, and we really battled for it.

“I’m very pleased with that, and also with the goal from the set-piece.”

It was Arsenal’s final game before the international break and the victory will do them a world of good. The Gunners are already five points off the top in the WSL, following their disappointing start.

Slegers continued: “We always look to find spaces between the lines.

“What we did well in the early build-up phase was manipulating the ball to open up those spaces. We progressed the ball up the pitch effectively, especially in the first half.

“The next step is to create even better chances from those moments when we’re facing forward against the back line.”
