Régis Le Bris believes Nilson Angulo has the attributes to thrive at Sunderland after his deadline-day switch from Anderlecht, with the Ecuador international due to link up with his team-mates later this week.
According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland’s decision to allow Simon Adingra to join AS Monaco on loan paved the way for Angulo’s move, with an initial fee believed to be in the region of £15 million.
Le Bris said recruitment work had built a clear picture of Angulo, describing a tall, powerful winger with a creative South American streak who relishes one-v-one moments. He added the newcomer might need time to connect with his team-mates and the league, though sometimes adaptation happens quickly, and stressed the club are pleased to have him.
The head coach also addressed Lutsharel Geertruida’s situation after Liverpool sought to assume his loan from RB Leipzig before the deadline. Sunderland blocked the move due to the lack of a replacement, and Le Bris said they held many honest conversations, the player accepted the outcome once the window shut, and he is ready to play with no concerns over his commitment.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman called Angulo an exciting addition, highlighting his pace, creativity and impact in the final third. He said the winger arrives ambitious to make an impression and already has senior experience domestically, in Europe and with Ecuador, and Sunderland look forward to welcoming him to Wearside.
