Sunderland Sign Kevin Danso on Loan in Deal Tied to Premier League Survival

Sunderland have completed the signing of Kevin Danso from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan, with the move already carrying clear long-term implications for all parties.

The agreement will cost Sunderland £2.5m initially, while an obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer for £22.5m will be triggered if Régis Le Bris keeps the club in the Premier League. It is a significant piece of business for the newly promoted side, who are preparing for the demands of top-flight football alongside their first European campaign since 1973.

Danso arrives with strong Premier League and European-level experience. The Austria international made 52 appearances for Tottenham after joining from RC Lens in January 2025, and his profile is expected to add authority, physicality and leadership to Sunderland’s back line at a crucial stage of the window.

For Tottenham, the move forms part of a wider reshaping of the squad under Roberto De Zerbi. Danso’s departure comes as the London club close in on Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, with a bid already accepted.

Tottenham Transfers Move Quickly Before Deadline

Adarabioyo, now 28, has built substantial top-level experience since leaving Manchester City, first at Fulham and then at Chelsea, where he has made more than 70 appearances in all competitions. Tottenham are also close to finalising a separate deal for Chelsea attacker Mykhailo Mudryk before Tuesday night’s deadline.

For Sunderland, though, the immediate focus is Danso. This is a targeted signing, financially structured, strategically timed and potentially central to their Premier League hopes.
