Sunderland sign Tottenham’s Kevin Danso on loan with obligation to buy | OneFootball

According to NY Times, Sunderland have signed Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Danso on loan, with an obligation to buy if they stay in the Premier League this season.

The north east side will pay a £2.5 million loan fee, and the obligation totals £22.25 million. If the move becomes permanent, the Austria international is set for a four-year contract with an option of a further 12 months.

He was an unused substitute in the season-opening defeat to Brentford, then scored in Spurs’ 5-1 Carabao Cup second-round win over Charlton Athletic last week. On Saturday he was omitted for the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, and Roberto De Zerbi said Danso, 27, was among those who had asked to leave before Tuesday’s deadline.

Danso has slipped down the pecking order following the summer arrivals of Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke. He has made 52 appearances for Spurs, starting each of their final six matches last season as a run of three wins and two draws saw De Zerbi’s side escape relegation.

He joined from RC Lens in February 2025 under Ange Postecoglou during an injury crisis, providing back-up to Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. He had been set to join Wolverhampton Wanderers instead, with a medical booked at the now-Championship club. Before Lens, he had loan spells at Southampton and Bundesliga side Fortuna Düsseldorf after joining from Augsburg in 2021, and he made 128 appearances for Lens between 2021 and 2025.
