Sunderland are assessing a move for Sassuolo left-back Josh Doig as they firm up defensive plans before the new season, Daily Record reports.

The 24-year-old Scotland international is also on the radar of Marseille and Olympiakos. Marseille explored a deal in January 2024 and are back in the frame.

Doig left Hibernian for Hellas Verona in 2022, spending two seasons there before a £5 million switch to Sassuolo in January 2024.

He made 30 Serie A appearances in the 2025-26 campaign and has two years left on his Sassuolo contract. A summer departure is considered increasingly possible.

The former Hibs defender made his senior Scotland debut against Liechtenstein last year after representing his country at youth level. Sunderland were linked with him four seasons ago.

Florent Ghisolfi is working to strengthen the left side of Régis Le Bris’ squad. The Black Cats are also pursuing Toulouse defender Dayann Methalie, who can play left-back or left-sided centre-back, while Doig would add greater senior experience.
