Regis Le Bris faces significant selection calls across multiple fronts this season, so here is Sunderland’s strongest XI if he has a full squad.
According to Sunderland Echo, the club took a measured approach to the summer window to strengthen for a landmark campaign. A seventh-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League for just under a decade secured Europa League football, with AZ Alkmaar, Dinamo Zagreb and AC Milan in their group for a first-ever appearance in the competition.
Experienced Belgium international Thomas Meunier signed a two-year deal after leaving Lille, becoming the first arrival. Dayaan Methalie followed from Toulouse, then a reported £10m move for Royal Antwerp midfielder Jules Ahoka landed in the final week.
In the final hours they beat Crystal Palace to a potential club-record agreement for Lyon’s Belgium winger Malick Fofana. After the 11pm deadline, Ecuador youth international Juan Riquelme Angulo was announced as the fifth and final signing.
With everyone fit and available, the notional strongest XI is as follows. Goalkeeper Robin Roefs, right-back Nordi Mukiele, centre-backs Kevin Danso and Dan Ballard, left-back Reinildo Mandava, midfielders Granit Xhaka and Noah Sadiki, right wing Habib Diarra, attacking midfielder Enzo Le Fee, left wing Malick Fofana, striker Brian Brobbey.
Le Bris could still adjust selections to manage opponents and schedules as he bids to progress on several fronts.
