After a very successful season, FC Bayern could actually be swimming in calm waters. If it weren’t for the debate surrounding the future of sporting director Max Eberl, which continues to cause discussion
It was Uli Hoeneß, the honorary president of FC Bayern, himself who reignited these discussions. He spoke around the cup final about the fact that there are still doubts as to whether Eberl is still the right man. Hoeneß stated that the chances are „60:40“ as far as an Eberl extension is concerned
The FC Bayern sports director was surprised, but also combative, knowing full well that this is not the first time Hoeneß has made statements of this kind
In the meantime, Lothar Matthäus has also commented on the Eberl case, with the DFB’s record international player assessing the current developments in his column on Sky
„The important thing is that this isn’t just about sport or squad composition. It’s about the fundamentals at FC Bayern. The club has been successful for decades – not just in sporting terms, but also economically. And that’s why even in successful times we question: What can we do better? Where can we become more efficient?“ said Matthäus in general

A healthy self-image is definitely part of this for the former international. „Bayern has invested a lot in recent years – in transfers, in salaries, in contract extensions. That’s part of the development of a top club. But at the same time, you ask yourself internally whether every decision was the right one in hindsight,“ explains Matthäus
That is why he sees the current developments surrounding Eberl as anything but dramatic. „I currently see no reason to fundamentally question his role. And to be honest: 60:40 sounds better than 40:60. Nevertheless, at FC Bayern it is part of the job that every personnel matter is examined and every decision is questioned. That is the business and the obligation of the club,“ says Matthäus.
