Darren Moore has revealed how Dejphon Chansiri prevented him from sealing deals for four players at Sheffield Wednesday after their promotion in 2023.
Darren Moore has revealed that Dejphon Chansiri prevented him from making four new signings in the summer of 2023, which was a key reason for him leaving Hillsborough.
It has been a difficult few years for the Owls, who were left on the brink due to the mismanagement of the Thai businessman, although, pleasingly, Arise Capital Partners completed their takeover in May.
Yet, fans will still be livid at the way the club operated under Chansiri, and the club are effectively starting again in League One, even though they had been pushing for promotion to the Premier League in the past.

Moore was the man who brought Wednesday back to the second tier, with the club winning promotion in remarkable fashion in 2023 after they overcame a 5-1 first leg defeat to Peterborough in the play-offs to reach the final - and they then beat Barnsley in stoppage time in extra-time at Wembley.
So, it was a great period for the club, and they went into pre-season with real momentum, as they looked to kick-on again in the Championship.
But, speaking to the Wednesday Word YouTube channel, Moore revealed he had had a disagreement with Chansiri over the transfer strategy, as the owner pulled the plug on four deals, with those players now playing in the top two divisions in England.
“I can’t reveal some of the names, but two of those players that I would’ve had are in the Premier League now, and we had them at Wednesday at the time.
“It was a difficult time, because anyone who knows me, knows that this is the time in the off-season where managers do their good work, so with us in the Championship, because of the football club itself, and the history, players want to play for Sheffield Wednesday.
“So I had four stellar signings done, and two are in the Premier League and two are in the Championship!
“They were young lads, who would’ve been absolutely outstanding but I wasn’t allowed to bring them in. The chairman didn’t want them, as he wanted to take control of the recruitment policy at the club.
“In League One I was left to it, I wheeled and dealed. But, in the Championship, the ones I was going to get were out of contract. They were good players, so, I was going to get them in, and, as I speak now, believe it or not, two are in the Premier League and two are in the Championship, and we had them there, but I wasn’t allowed to bring them in.
“We had an exchange, and I just said ‘look Mr Chairman, the momentum in Sheffield and the club, we had no time. We were playing catch-up, but the work I’d done with the agents to keep those players hanging on, I was hoping we’d push the button after we won promotion.”

We all know the mistakes that Chansiri made, and fans won’t be surprised to see that he overruled Moore on transfers.
Clearly, he was very impulsive and arrogant when it came to decision making, and he obviously thought he knew better than the manager, even though he had been working on those deals for a while.
It would be interesting to hear who those players were, and how different Wednesday’s future could have been if they had joined the club.
Of course, it’s obviously a shame for Moore, who left after that incredible promotion, and he will naturally wonder what might have been, and whether he would still be at Hillsborough, had those deals gone through.
Sheffield Wednesday fans won’t want to dwell on Chansiri’s ownership, but this is another example of how he didn’t do things properly, and it makes it easy to see why things went so wrong, so quickly.
But, in the bigger picture, even in League One, they can look ahead with optimism under the new regime.
David Storch and the family inherited a club in a mess, but they’ve done some very impressive work over the past few months to ensure the squad is able to compete this season.
