Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City could both be deducted points this season due to off-field issues at each club.

The Championship is starting to take shape, but the off-field issues of Sheffield Wednesday and Leicester City mean points deductions are likely to impact the table.

In the modern football world, fans have become increasingly aware of the financial side of the game, and certain clubs have been hit with big punishments in the past.

Everton and Nottingham Forest are recent examples in the Premier League, whilst Derby, Birmingham and the Owls are among those who have been deducted points in the EFL in the past.

Sheffield Wednesday facing up to another points deduction

It’s no secret that Wednesday are facing a massive crisis under owner Dejphon Chansiri, who has once again failed to pay the wages on time for September.

That is the fifth time in the past seven months that this has happened, with the EFL already issuing sanctions against the Yorkshire outfit in the form of a transfer ban.

There is no set penalty, so the independent commission will determine how many points Henrik Pedersen’s side will lose. There are examples of clubs being deducted points for failing to pay their players in the past, with Wigan losing four, and having another four suspended, in 2023.

Given the number of breaches by Wednesday, it remains to be seen if they will be hit harder.

Another potential issue facing the Owls is the threat of administration if Chansiri doesn’t agree to a sale, and that would bring an immediate points deduction.

Unlike the above, this punishment is already set, and in the event of administration, Wednesday would be deducted 12 points.

So, it remains to be seen how it plays out, but Pedersen and the players are going to be handicapped at some point with a deduction for the actions of Chansiri.

Leicester City’s promotion push could be impacted by points deduction

Leicester’s issues with PSR have also been well-documented over the years, with the club having been under the microscope in recent years as a Championship and Premier League club.

To the surprise of many, the Foxes won an appeal against a decision that could have resulted in a points deduction last year, but those problems haven’t gone away.

Therefore, following their relegation, it had been known for some time that Leicester could be hit with a penalty this season, which would be applied straight away.

There is no set time for when this will happen, and it will also be decided by an independent commission, so there are no clear rules that will determine how many points Marti Cifuentes’ side will lose.

Yet, the EFL are said to be pushing for a serious penalty, and Sky Sports have previously claimed Leicester could be looking at a deduction of ‘nine points or more’, which will obviously have a huge say on the promotion race, as the Midlands side look to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
