As Arsenal cruised into the FA Cup Fifth Round with a 4-0 defeat of League One Wigan we take a look at which players shone brightest on a wet, wintry night in North London.
Gabriel Martinelli: the Brazil forward is not always in Arsenal’s first choice starting line-up, but he continues to make the most of his opportunities. In scoring his well-taken 18th minute goal, Martinelli became the first Arsenal player to score 10+ goals in cup/European competitions in a single season since Ian Wright in 1994-95 (12).
Noni Madueke: the big-money summer signing from Chelsea once again showed why arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was so keen to lure him across London before the start of the season. Always threatening with the ball at his feet, his well taken goal to start the scoring after only 11 minutes marked his third strike in his last five starts. No wonder Arteta is able to appear so relaxed about Bukayo Saka’s most recent injury issue with such a strong replacement to call on.
Eberechi Eze: the England international looked a winner back in the FA Cup, the competition he helped Crystal Palace win last season. His two assists in the first half were sublime defence-splitting passes and the perfect response to his doubters after being subbed off at halftime in last week’s Premier League match at Brentford. Could have scored a couple too. He played himself into contention for further starts in the forthcoming league games away to Wolves and Tottenham this week.
Marli Salmon: the outrageously talented teenage defender replaced William Saliba to make his home debut, aged only 16. Did his bit to secure a clean sheet just a month after became the youngest player ever to represent Arsenal in the FA Cup, away to Portsmouth in the Third Round when he was 16 years 135 days old.
Own Goal: OG back on the scoresheet as Jack Hunt’s panic-ridden header into his own net marked the eighth time Arsenal have scored via an own goal this season. A happy coincidence or a mark of what happens when this intimidating Arsenal attack gets forward in numbers against opposing defences? Own goal moved level with Leandro Trossard in Arsenal’s goal tally for the season, five behind 13-goal leading scorer Viktor Gyokeres.
