Which Championship club has the best midfield options?

The EFL transfer window is now closed until the start of 2027, and unless free agents are added, all 24 Championship clubs have their squads set.

And one of the most important positions of the pitch that you need to have strong is the midfield - the ground they cover during a 90 minutes and the tackles and passes they put in can be an important factor of winning results

But who are the top SEVEN midfields in the Championship now that the window is shut?

Some of the clubs to narrowly miss out were Stoke City, who now have a strong amount of depth with the late signings of Jack McGlynn and Justin Devenny, and the early summer recruit of Ethan Galbraith from Swansea City was incredibly eye-catching,

Sheffield United also just miss out. Sydie Peck is on the up, Oliver Arblaster is now fully back from a long-term knee injury and Jairo Riedewald is solid, but the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Joe Rothwell are now 30 or older and need to prove something in order for the Blades to be in promotion contention.

Bristol City, Wrexham, Birmingham City, West Brom and QPR also had their positive points, but let's look at who FLW thinks have the seven BEST midfield options in the entirety of the second tier.

7 ? ? Derby County

If Derby County didn't land the deadline day addition of David Ozoh, then they likely would not have cracked the top seven, but the £4 million deal done with Crystal Palace adds a new dimension to John Eustace's options.

Ozoh has already had two loan stints at Pride Park, the first of which was very injury-hit, but he showed enough in the Championship last season to be considered a potential significant sale at Selhurst Park this summer.

In the end, County did very well to bring the price down to the £4 million mark, and he joins another big signing in the form of Bobby Clark, who joined permanently from RB Salzburg, with David Clowes splashing out £6 million on the ex-Liverpool playmaker.

Ozoh will play deeper and Clark more advanced, and the options around them are very solid as well. Lewis Travis and Alex Mowatt both offer different quality, but are very good Championship players in their own right, whilst 22-year-old Oscar Fraulo will get game-time too after his arrival last season from Borussia Monchengladbach - he's showed flashes of quality in his time on the pitch.

Completing the line-up is Republic of Ireland international Sammie Szmodics, who can also play out wide but is naturally a number 10 and will be battling for a starting spot with the aforementioned Clark when everyone is fully-fit.

The end to the transfer window that Derby had means that Eustace has a strong squad to choose from to try and mount a play-off push once more, and his midfield options are incredibly strong.

6 ? ? Southampton

Southampton may lack depth in the midfield area, but they certainly make up for it in quality.

One potential negative is that they did not get a young, ready-made replacement for Shea Charles after his big-money switch to Fulham, but they did however land the return of the prodigal son that is James Ward-Prowse - 31 years of age he may be now, but he's still got a wand of a right foot that he's been unable to put to much use on the sidelines at West Ham.

Whether Ward-Prowse starts many games is up to Tonda Eckert, whose midfield pairing when both are fit is still likely to be Flynn Downes combined with Caspar Jander, with youngster Cam Bragg also in the mix now after his emergence last season as Southampton finished in the top six.

Further forward, there are a number of players who can play in the 10 without it perhaps being their natural position - Leo Scienza, Kuryu Matsuki and Lewis Dobbin - but Finn Azaz should have that position locked down. A scorer of 11 Championship goals last season as well as notching eight assists, the Irishman is one of the best attacking midfielders in the entire division when he's on-song.

Given the lack of depth, 20-year-old Romeo Akachukwu might get more chances than he anticipated, especially if injuries kick in, but when it comes to overall quality, not many can compete with the Saints.

5 ? ? Swansea City

There may be suggestions of recency bias here given Swansea's solid start to the 2026-27 campaign, and whilst it may be the coaching wisdom of Vitor Matos that is producing the performances, their midfield options are fantastic.

Selling Ethan Galbraith to divisional rivals Stoke City earlier in the summer was a brave call, given he's one of the most talented engine room operators in the second tier, but the Swans hierarchy have done their best to re-populate that area of the pitch.

New Zealand international Elijah Just arrived from Motherwell after some eye-catching performances at the FIFA World Cup, and he's been joined by another performer from that tournament - Canada's Stephen Eustaquio, who joins from FC Porto.

That pair join the likes of Marko Stamenic, Melker Widell and a rejuvenated Jay Fulton, and that's not to mention Goncalo Franco is yet to be seen this season after suffering a pre-season injury - the Portuguese maestro will add even more technical ability to that area of the park.

It remains to be seen if Tom Iorpenda will play a significant part after his arrival from Huddersfield Town - he was a real star on loan at Notts County in League Two last season, but even if he is eased in, Swansea have more than enough strength in depth in midfield to be a force.

Burnley fans would probably like a bit more depth to their midfield options if they're going to play a 4-2-3-1 under Nicky Hayen, but there's some real quality within the individuals available for selection.

Looking at the number 10 position, the Clarets can finally count on Swiss international Zeki Amdouni in the Championship - he was loaned to Benfica the last time they were in this division, but he's surely the clubs best option to play off a centre-forward, unless he is utilised at the top end of the pitch himself.

If that is to be the case, then you've got Hannibal, Aaron Ramsey (not that one) and the illusive Mike Tresor as options for Hayen to select from, and a bit deeper, the experience of Josh Cullen and Josh Laurent is being joined by Celtic's Reo Hatate, who is certainly going to provide some energy and drive going forward.

The signing of young Lille midfielder Ugo Raghouber came out of left-field in the summer, but he could end up playing a big part for the East Lancashire outfit this year - there's still some question marks to answer for some of the squad, but there is no denying that there's quality there for all to see.

3 ? ? Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough had to make changes to their midfield this summer after cashing in on Hayden Hackney, who finally got a deserved Premier League move to Everton - and there's every reason to be high on Kim Hellberg's options.

Aidan Morris will be expected to start at the base of midfield under Hellberg, and he's one of the best in the division at that role - the new faces come further in-front of him.

Morris' American counterparts Rokas Pukstas and Sebastian Berhalter are going to bring some more drive and creativity to the midfield, with the latter scoring at the FIFA World Cup for the USA, whilst Leo Castledine, Myles Peart-Harris and Riley McGree are all also forward-thinking players in the middle of the park.

Connor Barron's late arrival from Rangers on loan will offer an alternative to Morris as the ball-winner of the clan, which will be needed if the latter is out injured, but it can be expected that a lot of goals and creativity are going to come from the engine room based on what Hellberg has to pick from and the way he has his team playing.

West Ham started the 2026-27 season with a midfield pairing of youngsters Lewis Orford - who barely featured for Stevenage on loan last year - and Mohamadou Kantè away at Burnley, but that has been significantly strengthened since.

The Hammers made a big splash in the transfer window by spending an EFL-record £22 milion on Celtic's Arne Engels, and he was followed to the London Stadium by Man City teenager Divine Mukasa, who is already making waves with his goalscoring.

It's perhaps the names that haven't yet featured for West Ham that have furthered bolstered their ranks. Tomas Soucek is still recovering from an ankle ligament injury, but when fit he should be a top Championship player, whilst Edson Alvarez will now stay in east London to add some more defensive steel, if he can be re-integrated back into Nuno's plans.

The same could be said for Soungoutou Magassa, who also didn't get an exit from the club during the transfer window, and his potential presence should give the likes of Engels and Mukasa more license for creative freedom.

There is still a lot of 'ifs' when it comes to West Ham and their midfield, but if all current options are available to them, then they have one of the strongest in the Championship by far.

Despite losing to West Ham 4-2 recently, Wolves' midfield options are still probably the best in the entire Championship.

Starting at the base of the engine room, there won't be many better defensive midfielders in the second tier this year than André, but that is to be expected when he cost the West Midlands outfit a mammoth £21 million.

Marshall Munetsi also has his uses, especially as a box-crashing midfielder, if not the most technically gifted in Cesar Peixoto's options, but it's further up the pitch in midfield where the class prevails.

Fer Lopez has been a revelation so far in the Championship as an advanced midfielder, and the summer loan arrival of Jordan James from Stade Rennais after his Leicester City exploits in 2025-26 was a real coup for Peixoto to get his hands on.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde is also going to be a useful option in the middle of the park when the Haiti international has recovered from a hamstring injury, and there's also Tommy Doyle and Boubacar Traore to consider as well - with that amount of quality to select, it's hard to find a better midfield selection than Wolves.
