Tottenham are in dire straits once again after Newcastle inflicted a second straight Premier League loss on Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Off the back of last weekend’s disastrous opening loss at Brentford, Spurs succumbed to second-half goals from Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa, who continue to look like different players under new Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle.

Omar Marmoush had chances to score on his Tottenham debut but failed to convert, while Savio was notable for his absence due to muscular fatigue off the back of his impressive midweek cameo against Charlton.

The defeat will feel most bitter for former Newcastle man Sandro Tonali, who moved to Spurs for £100m in the summer and was jeered off by the away fans when he was substituted, following an unremarkable performance.

Next up

Tottenham will return to action next Saturday at Nottingham Forest as they try to get their first point of the season on the board.

Newcastle, meanwhile, return to St James’ Park to host Bournemouth in the early kick-off that day.

Roberto De Zerbi calls loss 'unfair result'

"Disappointed for the result because until the first goal we conceded I think we played better than Newcastle,” he told BBC Sport. “We lost ball possession in the first half because we didn't defend in the right way, the distance between the defenders and attackers was too big.

"We can improve in the defensive phases but today was an unfair result.

"At the beginning of the second half we had some chance to create the potential chances. We created many chances to score, we have to improve the last decision, because that will make a difference. At the end we are disappointed for the result and our fans. We are working to be a great team. When we become a team I think we can change the story of the last two seasons for Tottenham.

"We are working to be good on the pitch, if you believe in work and training then you have to improve day by day."

In case you missed it - Roberto De Zerbi clarified why Savio was absent from Tottenham’s matchday squad before today’s clash.

“We had some bad news yesterday,” he told Sky Sports. “He suffered muscular fatigue. The medical staff didn't want to take a risk. I agree with them."

Nico Gonzalez reflects on instant Newcastle impact four days after joining

"It was amazing,” Nico Gonzalez told BBC Sport. “I have been four days here so it wasn't easy for me to start but I am really happy for the work I have done and the team has done.

"The idea (in the second half) was the same but we made a few adjustments and were a little more aggressive on them.

“I think that this group has so much potential, we are really young and have so much space to improve and even today I felt like we kept on improving and feeling more comfortable and that is the way we need to keep going."

"I'm very happy,” he told Sky Sports. “Proud of the team and proud of the club. I know these fans; they are so lovely. They love the club, they love the players. What they want is for us to give them what we have. We tried; it was difficult today, but they never stopped singing. Today is for them.

"Of course we lost so many players (in the summer). But the club worked well. It's good because it's a challenge. We need players to step up. Like me, I didn't play last year.

"Now I have the chance to play, so I need to enjoy every single moment.

"There are so many new players. Even Amar (Dedic) has been unbelievable today.

"Even Anthony (Elanga) now. We have to step up and we have to [be up for] the challenge. With the fans behind us, nobody can stop us.

How did the debutants do?

Two new recruits started today in north London: Omar Marmoush for Tottenham, Nico Gonzalez for Spurs. Both came from Man City.

Marmoush didn’t have the worst day. He got himself into a couple of good positions and had a handful of decent chances to score. But he blanked.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, already looks like a fabulous signing. His diagonal ball to Amar Dedic sparked Anthony Elanga’s opener. On the whole, it was a really assured display from the Spaniard.

Roberto De Zerbi: 'We will not panic'

"We will not panic,” Roberto De Zerbi told Sky Sports. “I know very well where we are going, what the plan is and what difficult problems we could find in our way.

“I am sorry for the fans and sorry for the players for the result but we have to improve and to change two seasons like the last two is impossible in 10 days and with people in the transfer market.

“We have to work hard on the pitch and find the connection with the players because last season before the end of the season we were in the Championship and we stayed up together.

"Now we have to keep clam and focus on improvement. We have a great squad and great players, we can't use all the players we brought but if we work in this way and believe in ourselves I think we will change the last two seasons. If the rush is more important than the journey we can't find the solutions to the last two seasons."
