Congolese international Yoane Wissa (29 years old) was one of the key architects of Newcastle United's emphatic 3-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night, during matchday 7 of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Played at St James’ Park, the match showcased the outstanding performance of the Democratic Republic of Congo striker. Wissa opened the scoring in the 8th minute, then delivered an assist in the 30th minute for Englishman Anthony Gordon.

Thanks to this all-round display, the former Brentford forward was deservedly named man of the match, rewarding his decisive impact throughout the clash with the Dutch side.

Eddie Howe hails Wissa’s outstanding performance against PSV

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe praised his player on TNT Sports, recalling the challenges Wissa faced since joining the club:

"The start was tough for him here," Howe admitted. "For any new player, suffering a serious injury before even taking part in a training session is mentally very challenging. It took us time to get him back to his best level, and I genuinely believe he still has room to grow."

Howe added:

"It was a big night for him, especially because these are exactly the kind of matches he came to the club for, and I’m delighted with his positive impact."

The English coach also expressed his admiration for Wissa’s journey at Brentford:

"I always admired his career at Brentford. He was a decisive player, capable of scoring important goals. I like his mentality, his determination, and his positive aggression on the pitch."

"He had a tough start since he arrived. He was out injured for a long time. I’ve been through a similar situation here and I know how hard it is to watch matches from the stands."

He added:

"Scoring your first Champions League goal is a truly special moment. He put in an excellent performance."

Thanks to this comprehensive win, Newcastle climb to 13 points and now sit in seventh place, while PSV remain stuck on eight points in twenty-second position.
