Valencia CF said in a statement that Rubén Iranzo has sustained a sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee after being hurt in Friday’s training session.

The 22-year-old defender alternates between Miguel Ángel Angulo’s Mestalla side and the first team, and was injured in the penultimate session before Valencia’s meeting with Real Madrid.

Tests on Saturday clarified the extent of the damage after early concern within the club and the player’s camp that it could be a serious knee injury.

This season he featured late on in the 1-0 league win at Getafe and has 292 minutes in the Copa across three starts against Maracena (0-5), Cartagena (1-2) and Burgos (0-2).

He will follow a medical, physiotherapy and reconditioning programme at the Ciudad Deportiva until clinical improvement allows him to rejoin the rest of the squad.
