Valencia have terminated Mayssam Benama’s contract three months after his January arrival, after he appeared before a judge following detention over an alleged gender-based violence offence.

He was also involved in a traffic accident while travelling to France to look for his partner, spending three weeks in intensive care, Marca reports.

He was regarded as one of French football’s emerging talents and captained his country at the last Under-20 World Cup. He featured in only five matches for Valencia Mestalla.

In the legal case, his partner did not file a complaint and the matter was resolved with a fine, with a criminal record noted, after a plea agreement.

The club contacted police once it became aware of the events.
